The building was designed by Foster + Partners, constructed by Skanska, completed in 2003 and opened in the spring of 2004. The primary occupant of the building is Swiss Re, a global reinsurance company, and the building is often referred to as the 'Swiss Re Tower.' Its distinctive shape has earned the building several nicknames, including 'the gherkin,' 'the cucumber building,' and other names referring to its phallic appearance.
